Living in Torrevieja

Torrevieja is the largest coastal town in the Vega Baja: a lively city set between two salt lagoons and the sea, with residents from more than a hundred countries. Beaches, a hospital, schools and shops are all close at hand, but so are crowds, plenty of high-rise blocks and heavy summer traffic.

Housing

Torrevieja has a compact centre full of apartment blocks, surrounded by a ring of residential urbanisations. In and around the centre, El Acequión, Playa del Cura and Los Locos, most people live in flats, often within walking distance of the sea and everyday services.

  • La Mata (Torrelamata), to the north, has its own small centre, a long beach and a somewhat calmer feel.
  • Los Altos, Aguas Nuevas and El Chaparral are residential areas of bungalows, terraced and linked houses; Los Altos also has new builds and many families.
  • La Siesta and San Luis are older urbanisations of detached houses and bungalows.
  • Los Balcones and Lago Jardín lie inland and have more villas and larger plots.

To the south the municipality borders Orihuela Costa. Punta Prima, often linked with Torrevieja, falls largely within Orihuela. Torrevieja is among the Spanish municipalities with the most holiday rental homes, so check the mix of permanent residents and holidaymakers in any complex you consider.

Work and economy

The town grew up around salt production and fishing. Salt is still harvested from the lagoons, but most jobs today are in tourism, hospitality, retail, construction and services such as property, healthcare and education. There is also a large desalination plant.

Because the population is so international, there is demand for people who speak several languages, for instance in shops, care and property. Many jobs are seasonal, though, and pay in the tourism sector is often modest. For office and industrial work, many residents commute to Elche, Alicante, Orihuela or Murcia. If you work remotely, check which internet connection is available at the specific address.

Population

According to the INE, Torrevieja had approx. 98,500 inhabitants on 1 January 2025. The town's own register, which also counts more recent registrations, recorded approx. 113,500 people in May 2026. More than half of them (approx. 57%) hold a foreign nationality, from around 120 countries.

According to that register, the largest foreign groups are from Ukraine, Colombia, Russia, the United Kingdom and Morocco. There are also Scandinavians, Belgians, Dutch and Germans, some retired and some spending the winter here. In summer the number of people in town rises sharply with holidaymakers and second-home owners. As a result, Torrevieja is home both to families in the newer districts and to many older residents.

Schools and education

Torrevieja has a wide choice of state schools: more than ten primary schools (CEIP) and five state secondary schools (IES), including IES Libertas, IES Las Lagunas and IES Torrevigía. Two primary schools were added in September 2023: CEIP Amanecer and a school in temporary classrooms, built at short notice because of rapid growth. A sixth secondary school is planned in Los Altos.

Several older school buildings are being renovated or extended, and places are in high demand. Ask early about availability in your area. Teaching is in Spanish, with Valencian taught as a subject.

  • There are also state-funded private schools (concertado), such as Colegio La Purísima.
  • The Escuela Oficial de Idiomas offers language courses, including Spanish for adults.
  • International schools following the British curriculum can be found nearby, for example in Orihuela Costa.

Shops and markets

As the largest town in the area, Torrevieja has every kind of shop. The centre has shopping streets with clothing, footwear and specialist shops, fresh food shops and supermarkets from all the main chains. International shops stocking British, Scandinavian, Russian and Latin American products, among others, are easy to find.

  • Weekly market: Fridays from roughly 8am to 2pm on Avenida Delfina Viudes, next to the water park outside the centre. Fresh produce, clothing and accessories.
  • La Mata market: Wednesdays on Avenida de Francia.
  • Shopping centres: Habaneras in town, and La Zenia Boulevard in Orihuela Costa, approx. 10 km away.

On Fridays, and especially in summer, the area around the market gets very busy and parking is difficult.

Culture and sights

The town's history revolves around salt and the sea. Torrevieja grew up around an old watchtower and was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake in 1829, after which it was rebuilt on a regular street grid.

  • Eras de la Sal: the former salt store and loading jetty by the sea, now an open-air stage.
  • Museo del Mar y de la Sal, covering fishing and salt production.
  • S-61 Delfín submarine: open to visitors in the harbour.
  • Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción on the main square.
  • Torre del Moro and Torre de La Mata: old watchtowers with views along the coast.

The town has a strong musical tradition built around the habanera, songs that sailors brought back from Cuba. The Teatro Municipal and the Palacio de la Música host concerts and performances all year round.

Fiestas de la Purísimalate November to 8 DecemberThe town's biggest festival, with concerts, paella contests, giants and a procession on 8 December.

Healthcare

Torrevieja heads its own health department. The public Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja stands on the edge of town, approx. 5 km from the centre, and has a 24-hour emergency department. Since October 2021 it has again been run directly by the regional health service.

To see a GP you register at one of the five health centres: La Loma, El Acequión, La Mata, Patricio Pérez or San Luis. Out of hours, urgent care is available at the PAC in La Loma and, since August 2025, at El Acequión as well. The second point was opened because existing urgent care was under heavy pressure.

There is also the private Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja (formerly San Jaime), plus plenty of dentists and pharmacies. Rapid growth can mean waiting times, so many people consider private health insurance as well.

Outdoor leisure

The town has kilometres of coastline with sandy beaches, rocky coves and natural seawater pools along the promenade. The best-known beaches are Playa del Cura, Los Locos, Los Náufragos and the long beach at La Mata.

  • Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park: walking and cycling routes along the pink salt lagoon, with flamingos and other waterbirds.
  • Promenade and harbour breakwater: good for a long walk or a run.
  • Water sports: sailing, diving and paddleboarding from the marinas.
  • Golf: several courses within about fifteen minutes in Orihuela Costa and Rojales.

In July and August the beaches and promenades are very crowded and the midday heat can be hard going. Early mornings, spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to be outside.

Indoor leisure

For a seaside town, there is plenty to do indoors. The Teatro Municipal and the Palacio de la Música stage theatre, dance and both classical and contemporary music; the Palacio de la Música also houses the music conservatory.

  • Museums about the sea and salt, and the Museo de la Habanera.
  • Sports halls, swimming pools and gyms, plus clubs for basketball, padel, swimming and more.
  • A public library and countless associations and clubs run by foreign residents.

On rainy or very hot days, the shopping centres in and around town are a popular escape. The restaurant scene is large and international, from Spanish tapas to Asian and Latin American cooking.
