Living in Formentera del Segura

Formentera del Segura is a small, compact village in the Vega Baja, on the left bank of the River Segura and about 10 km from the coast at Guardamar. The old centre around the church and town hall is quiet and very Spanish, while the Los Palacios district has plenty of new builds and international residents. Rojales and Benijófar are practically next door, so many services are shared with the neighbouring villages.

Housing

At just over 4 km², this is one of the smallest municipalities in the area, so everything is close together. Broadly, there are three residential areas.

  • The village centre: traditional village houses and terraced homes on narrow streets around the square, often older and sometimes in need of renovation. Your neighbours here will mostly be Spanish.
  • Los Palacios: the district about 1.5 km from the centre, bordering Rojales, with apartment complexes sharing a communal pool, linked houses and recent new builds. Popular with buyers from northern Europe.

The smaller Fincas de la Vega urbanisation also belongs to the municipality. On the edges, towards the farmland, you will find scattered detached villas and country houses. Because the village sits right beside the Segura, it is sensible to check whether a property lies in a flood-risk zone; the Vega Baja suffered severe flooding in September 2019.

Work and economy

Traditionally, Formentera del Segura has lived from farming in the fertile Segura huerta, growing vegetables and citrus and keeping bees; the village is known locally for its honey. That agricultural landscape still surrounds the village today.

Nowadays many residents work in services, construction and retail, often outside the municipality. The main employers nearby are in Torrevieja, Orihuela and Elche, and tourism on the coast offers seasonal work. Remote workers will find a quiet base with reasonable road links via the CV-91 and the AP-7. In practice, though, you will need a car for almost any commute.

Population

According to the municipal register (INE), Formentera del Segura had approximately 4,750 residents on 1 January 2024. The village is growing steadily, by a few per cent a year, mainly thanks to new housing in Los Palacios. Twenty years ago only about 2,000 people lived here.

About 40% of residents were born abroad (2022 register). The largest group comes from the United Kingdom, followed by Morocco, with smaller numbers from Ecuador, Bulgaria and France among others.

The old centre feels very much like a Spanish village, whereas in Los Palacios you will hear more English. Some basic Spanish goes a long way if you want to take part in village life.

Schools and education

The village itself has two state facilities for young children:

  • Escuela Infantil Municipal Los Duendes: council-run nursery and early years education.
  • CEIP Juan Carlos I: state infant and primary school, with two classes per year group for children aged 3 to 12.

Teaching is in Spanish, with Valencian as a subject and English as well. Children who start young usually pick up the language quickly; older children tend to need more support.

For secondary education (ESO and bachillerato), pupils attend a secondary school (IES) in a neighbouring town; which one depends on the regional catchment rules, so check with the school or the town hall. English-speaking international schools are found further afield, including around Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Alicante; allow 25 to 45 minutes by car.

Shops and markets

For day-to-day shopping, the village and Los Palacios have small supermarkets, a bakery and a handful of bars and restaurants. The choice is limited, so most residents do their main weekly shop at the larger supermarkets in Rojales and Ciudad Quesada, just a few minutes away.

On Mondays there is a weekly market in the village itself, on Calle Joaquín Canales Mora and Calle Italia, selling fruit and vegetables, olives, clothing and shoes. The larger Saturday market in Almoradí is about 10 minutes away. For clothing, electronics and furnishings, head to Torrevieja or the La Zenia Boulevard shopping centre on the Orihuela Costa, about 30 minutes by car. Elche and Alicante offer the full city range.

Culture and sights

Formentera del Segura has Islamic roots. In 1731 the then lord of Formentera, Nicolás Pérez de Sarrió, founded the present settlement, and in the 19th century the village grew quickly as the large estates were split into small plots. The 1829 earthquake destroyed most of the village, which was then rebuilt. Until 1916 it was known simply as Formentera.

  • Iglesia de La Purísima: the parish church, dedicated to the village's patroness, close to the town hall in the centre.
  • Molino Hidráulico: a restored water mill on the Segura, with its original milling machinery and the miller's house. The town hall runs guided tours; check the dates in advance.
  • Ermita de San Roque: a small chapel in green surroundings close to the mill.

Healthcare

Formentera del Segura falls under the Torrevieja Health Department. Hospital care and A&E are at the Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja, approximately 18 km or about 20 minutes away.

For GP, paediatric and nursing care you go to the Centro Médico in the village, which holds surgeries on weekday mornings. Los Palacios has a smaller surgery open a few times a week. Outside those hours, urgent cases are seen at the Rojales health centre. You will need a SIP card, which you apply for once you are on the padrón.

Pharmacies, including the on-duty rota, can be found in Rojales and Benijófar among other places, a few minutes' drive away. There is no hospital within walking distance and public transport is limited, so a car is essential in practice.

Outdoor leisure

The village sits in the middle of the huerta, which is its greatest asset if you enjoy the outdoors. Flat farm tracks are ideal for walking and cycling past fields, irrigation channels and the banks of the Segura.

  • The Sotos del Segura cycle route (approx. 21 km, easy) follows the wooded old river meanders known as sotos.
  • From Benijófar, a walking route of approx. 18 km passes the viewpoint by the water mill and runs through dry riverbeds towards Algorfa.
  • The golf courses of Ciudad Quesada are less than 10 minutes away.

Guardamar's beaches, backed by dunes and pine woods, are about 12 minutes by car. July and August are hot, so plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening.

Indoor leisure

Within the village the options are modest: a few bars and restaurants where social life happens, and council-run cultural events around the festivals. Some apartment complexes have their own gym.

For more choice, you will drive to the surrounding area. Rojales and Ciudad Quesada have gyms, restaurants and clubs run by the international community. Torrevieja offers a theatre, museums and cinemas, and on the Orihuela Costa you can combine shopping with a film. Elche, Alicante and Murcia are within easy reach for concerts, larger museums and a night out in the city.
