Living in San Fulgencio

San Fulgencio is a farming village in the Vega Baja that is also home to one of Spain's largest residential estates: La Marina with El Oasis, close to the coastal dunes and pine woods. The Spanish village and the highly international estate lie about five kilometres apart and feel like two different places. Around two thirds of residents were born abroad.

Housing

San Fulgencio is made up of two quite different parts. The village (known locally as 'el pueblo') sits among the citrus groves of the Vega Baja and has a Spanish feel, with village houses, flats above shops and some newer terraced homes on the outskirts.

About five kilometres east, towards the coast, lies the Urbanización La Marina, one of the largest residential estates in Spain. Building began in the late 1980s. Within it you will find, among others:

  • La Marina and La Escuera: many bungalows, linked houses and detached villas with gardens.
  • El Oasis: around the green Paraje El Oasis, with a similar mix.
  • Monte Victoria, La Plana, El Oral and Sector 8: partly newer districts, including recent new builds.

Note that the coastal village of La Marina and La Marina beach belong to the municipality of Elche, not San Fulgencio. Always check which municipality a property is in.

Work and economy

San Fulgencio has traditionally lived from farming. Vegetables and citrus are grown around the village, and there are packing and export firms for fruit and vegetables. There is also a sand quarry and a small industrial estate.

With the growth of La Marina since the 1980s, construction, property maintenance, hospitality, shops and services for international residents have become important. Many small businesses on the estate are run by foreign residents themselves. Unemployment rose sharply after the 2008 crisis, which shows how much the town depends on the housing market.

There are no large employers. People in salaried jobs usually commute to Elche, Torrevieja, Guardamar or Alicante, nearly always by car. For remote workers, being close to Alicante airport is a real advantage.

Population

According to the INE, San Fulgencio had around 9,400 inhabitants on 1 January 2024. Most of them live not in the village but on the La Marina estate.

San Fulgencio is among the Spanish municipalities with the highest share of foreign residents. In 2022 about two thirds of registered residents had been born abroad. The British are by far the largest group, followed by Germans, with Moroccan and French residents among others. On La Marina you mostly hear English; in the village, mostly Spanish.

Many residents are retired and some live there for only part of the year, so in summer and over the holidays there are noticeably more people than the official figure suggests. Registering on the padrón helps the council secure more funding.

Schools and education

The state schools are in the village:

  • Escuela Infantil Municipal La Ranita: council-run nursery for the youngest children.
  • CEIP José María Manresa Navarro: state infant and primary school (ages 3 to 12).
  • Sección del IES La Encantá: a branch of the Rojales secondary school, offering the four years of ESO.
  • Centro de Formación de Personas Adultas: council adult education centre.

For families on La Marina this means a journey of about 5 to 6 km to school. For bachillerato, pupils go to a secondary school in a neighbouring town. Teaching is in Spanish and Valencian, with English as a subject; older children who join later often need extra support. English-speaking international schools are found in the wider area, half an hour or more by car.

Shops and markets

The village has the basics: a few supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, banks and cafés. La Marina offers more, largely aimed at international residents, with supermarkets, restaurants, estate agents, dentists, opticians and charity shops. Most businesses stay open all year.

  • Thursday: weekly market on the La Marina estate, in the morning.
  • Saturday: large market on the edge of La Marina, on the industrial estate, also in the morning.

The village also has its own smaller weekly market; ask the town hall for the current day and location. For bigger shopping trips and shopping centres, head to Elche, Guardamar or Torrevieja. Guardamar has a market on Sundays.

Culture and sights

San Fulgencio was founded in 1729 by Bishop Luis Antonio Belluga, who had the marshland near the mouth of the Segura drained. The village is named after Saint Fulgentius, and King Felipe V granted it the status of Villa Real.

Things to see:

  • Parish church from the 18th century in the village centre.
  • Archaeological museum with Iberian and Greek pottery from the area.
  • El Oral: remains of an early Iberian settlement from the 6th century BC.
  • La Escuera: a late Iberian site, which also gave its name to part of the estate.

In the village, the music society and the annual tapas route are fixtures of cultural life. On La Marina, clubs and associations of international residents organise a wide range of activities.

Healthcare

San Fulgencio has two public GP facilities: the centro de salud in the village, which was refurbished and extended in 2023, and a consultorio on La Marina. Both work by appointment on weekdays. For urgent care at night and at weekends, you go to the Guardamar del Segura health centre, about 8 km from the village.

The town falls under the Torrevieja Health Department (Departament de Salut de Torrevieja). The reference hospital is the Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja, about 25 to 30 km away. The Hospital Vega Baja near Orihuela belongs to a different department. La Marina also has pharmacies, a Red Cross post and private dentists and physiotherapists.

To use public healthcare you need to be on the padrón and apply for a SIP card. Without a car, the hospital is hard to reach.

Outdoor leisure

The La Marina estate borders the pine woods and dunes behind the coast, and paths through the trees lead to the sea on foot or by bike. The coastline is split: to the north lie La Marina beach and village, which belong to Elche, while to the south the dune forest of Guardamar begins, with the beaches of Guardamar del Segura. San Fulgencio itself has no beach of its own.

  • Paraje El Oasis: a green recreation area on the estate with picnic and barbecue spots.
  • Salt pans and wetlands: the Salinas de Santa Pola and El Hondo are nearby, good for flamingos and other water birds.
  • Sport: pitches, tennis courts and bowls on La Marina; golf at Ciudad Quesada and elsewhere in the area.

July and August are hot and the coast gets busy, so set off early.

Indoor leisure

Indoor life revolves largely around clubs and societies. La Marina has a wide range of clubs and hobby groups, often set up by international residents, plus two private sports complexes with pools. The village has the municipal library, the music society and the archaeological museum.

The tourist office on La Marina, which is being extended, is a useful starting point for activities and courses, including language classes. There are plenty of restaurants and bars on the estate, often with live music or sport on TV.

For cinemas, theatres and large shopping centres, drive to Elche, Torrevieja or Alicante, about 20 to 40 minutes away.
